Retail Sales
Retail sales is a signal of economic growth because it measures how much money is spent at the consumer level. Consumer consumption accounts for two-thirds of many developed economies.

Large Retailer's Sales y/y: -2.1%, forecast -1.6%, pr. -2.2% (Apr), 0.2% (Mar)
Retail Sales m/m: -0.2%, forecast -0.5%, pr. -0.1% (Apr), 0.4% (Mar)

Retail sales fell 0.2% on the month in May, and were up 0.2% on the year. Both figures beat forecasts. The sub index that shows large retailer's sales declined 2.1%, a bigger fall than expected. The data offsets another weak household spending release and may indicate that consumers, though feeling pressured by higher prices, are still buying goods. The figure is not adjusted for inflation, so the gains may only reflect rising costs for food and energy. With inflation continuing to climb, as today's results show, demand will cool and sales may turn negative.

Retail sales climbed 0.1% on the year in April, the weakest showing since July, and lower than expectations. Large retailers saw their sales fall 2.2%. Consumers are watching their spending as high inflation batters their confidence, a story seen in many of the major economies. Household spending was down last month, and is expected to decrease again in its report on Thursday evening. Wage increases are not keeping up with inflation, and consumers are cutting back purchases of new clothing and other items. At a time when exports are cooling as a result of a global slowdown, a decrease in domestic spending will only add problems to the Japanese economy in the second quarter.

Retail sales increased 1.1% in March as a result of increased spending on fuel. Sales at fuel retailers rose 4% from a year earlier. The data does suggest that consumer spending may not be as weak imagined when looking at the consumer sentiment data.

Large Retailer's Sales y/y: 1.3%, forecast 2.2%, pr. -2.0% (Jan - rev. from -1.9%)

Retail Sales grew by 3.1%, a surge compared to January 1.3%. This number surprised forecasts on the upside. Even large retailers, which had been negative 4 out of the last 5 months, saw an improvement to 1.3%. Forecasts however called for a slightly larger rise.

It was the 7th straight month of growth. Still, amid worsening sentiment due to sluggish wage growth, rising food, fuel prices, it is difficult to say that consumption solid, as retail sales were inflated by a 14.8% rise in fuel costs.
