Japanese retail sales fell less than forecast by economists. On the month sales rose 0.9% to make it the third straight month of positive reading. The report from the Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry reflects increased spending at department stores, supermarkets and convenience stores, and shows a pickup in the economy may be on its way.

Japanese retail sales were down 2.5% compared to a year ago in July, a figure that though it beat forecasts, is still the 11th straight month that sales have been down on an annual basis. That marks the biggest losing streak since 2003, and represents how the Japanese economy is being pressured by depressed consumer spending. The Japanese economy did lift out of the technical definition of a recession in the 2nd quarter, but growth was based on increases in government tax-relief measures and other economic stimulus policies such as incentives to buy cars and electronic products. Those measures may still help to shore up sales, but its still a while away from a fully fledged improvement in consumer spending.
