"Household" Confidence for April
Consumer confidence declined again in Japan, falling to a measure of 35.2, reported the Cabinet Office. A reading below 50 implies contraction. Confidence is now at a new fresh 5-year low. Consumers are concerned about a slowing economy which is putting pressure on employment and wages. At the same time, inflation is driving up the prices of energy and food. The four sub-indexes all fell:

"Household" Confidence for March
Consumer confidence rose in March, the first time it has done so in 6 months. Consumers and households have digested the prospects of a weakening economy and rising inflation. February's confidence of 36.1 was the lowest since March 2003. The sub-indexes for general well-being, employment and willingness to purchase durable goods increased, while the income growth sub-index declined. The Yen was declining during the Friday session, as carry trade sentiments were piqued by news that the Bank of England wanted to help ease money-market conditions boosting the appeal of higher-yielding currencies. |

For February
Japan's consumer confidence slipped to a 5 year low in February, dipping to 36.1, the lowest since March 2003. The sentiment index for general households includes views on incomes and jobs, and shows Japanese households increasingly pessimistic as food and energy costs rise, and the housing sector enters a recessionary phase. |

Sub-indexes of economic well being, income growth, employment, and willingness to buy durable goods all deteriorated. Also, 82.2% of the respondents expected prices to rise in the coming year, an all time high. |
