The dollar traded mixed on Monday as risk aversion rose. London trading was closed for a bank holiday, reducing trade volumes. Equity markets fell across the globe, taking their cues from a 7% equity plunge in China.

The dollar rose on Friday as US stocks fell. US personal income was flat while spending increased a modest 0.2 percent. Data on US and European consumer sentiment were better than expected. The S and P 500 fell 2.05 points to 1,028.93.

The dollar declined in NY trading Thursday as US stocks reversed earlier losses and closed higher. US Q2 GDP beat market expectations and jobless claims declined. The dollar index fell to 78.06, about 0.5 point above important support. The S&P 500 was up 2.86 points to 1,030.98.

The dollar rose in NY trading Wednesday, supported by risk aversion following reports that China's government may take steps to curb excess capacity and overinvestment in certain sectors. Since the beginning of the financial crisis, good news had pressured the dollar while bad news had supported it.

The dollar traded mixed in a narrow range on Tuesday. US house prices posted their second consecutive month-on-month increases and consumer confidence climbed more than expected, adding to signs the US economy is recovering.

The dollar was lower versus the commodity currencies on Monday but higher against other key currencies. Asian and European stock markets rose, but the S and P 500 declined a modest 0.56 points to 1,025.57. The yen fell modestly as Nikkei rallied over 3 percent.

The dollar and yen fell on Friday as stronger European purchasing managers’ indexes and a jump in US existing home sales boosted risk appetite. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said “economic activity appears to be leveling out, both in the United States and abroad, and the prospects for a return to growth in the near term appear good.”

The dollar traded mostly lower against its counterparts on Thursday. The dollar index fell for a third day as US stocks rose for a third day. The Conference Board US leading economic indicators index rose in July for a fourth straight month and manufacturing in the Philadelphia region expanded in August for the first time in almost a year, adding to signs the US recession is ending.

The dollar reversed overnight gains as risk appetite improved and US stocks reversed morning softness and closed higher in New York Wednesday. Overnight the Shanghai composite index fell over 4%, leading other Asian stock markets lower and supporting the safe haven currencies.

The dollar and yen reduced yesterday’s gains as risk aversion eased and global stock markets stabilized on Tuesday. US producer prices fell more than expected, not prompting the Fed to raise interest rates anytime soon.
Hans Nilsson2009-08-17
The dollar and yen rose on Monday as risk aversion spiked and global stock markets plunged led by the largest drop in Chinese stocks since November 2008. The dollar index has been negatively correlated with risk appetite and surging equity and commodity markets. Stocks and commodities, currently overbought, are at strong resistances, while the dollar index has formed a bottom.
Hans Nilsson2009-08-14
The dollar and yen rose on Friday after US consumer confidence unexpectedly fell and US stocks declined. US industrial production rose while the decline in the eurozone and US annual inflation rates indicated inflationary concerns are premature. The S&P 500 declined 8.64 points to 1,004.09. Treasury yields dropped as faltering consumer confidence and tame inflation damped optimism of a quick economic recovery.
